Jason's Story

Small Steps Overcome Big Challenges

When Jason entered the foster care system he’d never played the guitar, but he wanted to.  There was no reason for him to believe that becoming a foster kid would give him the opportunity to learn how to play, but it did.

Just a few months ago Jason’s caregiver made a Little Wish to Treehouse.  She wanted to be able to provide Jason with something positive in his life, a safe place for him to express himself and build confidence.  Guitar lessons seemed like what he needed, but Deena couldn’t stretch her budget far enough to cover the cost of the lessons.  So she asked Treehouse to pay for the lessons, which we did.  Deena loves her foster son and has given him a warm, loving, safe home where he can heal.  But she needs a little help from time to time to provide other healing opportunities like guitar lessons.

So when we asked her if Jason would be willing to perform at our Little Wishes Big Talent showcase they both jumped at the chance to give back to Treehouse.  Okay, it was probably more of a hop for Jason because, as it turns out, he was really nervous about it.  He was also determined to do it.  In the weeks leading up to the event he worked exclusively on his performance piece and practiced for 20 minutes a day, three days a week.

I had the pleasure of being in the audience the night he performed.  It was clear that he was extremely nervous, but I can tell you that young man conquered his nerves and performed beautifully in front of his first audience.  And the smile on his face when he was done warmed every single heart in the room.

The Little Wishes Big Talent showcase was an opportunity for kids to show what they’ve been learning in the lessons that Treehouse pays for.  We invited the sponsors who give discounts and scholarships to Treehouse so they could see their generosity in action.  All of the performances were heartwarming and uplifting.  At the end of the event Deena stood up spontaneously and thanked the sponsors who make it possible for her son to take guitar lessons.
